Tabitha Goes to BEA 2013

May 4, 2013 Announcements 27

book-expo-americaBOOK EXPO AMERICA! – Have you heard of it – the famed BEA, or ArmChair BEA? If you are a book blogger you probably have. This is one of the biggest book events of the year! I heard about it last year and thought “Oh wouldn’t that be an awesome thing to go to!” Then I promptly forgot all about it, and hadn’t thought about it again until last Friday.

April and I were talking and BEA came up, and all of a sudden I got some wild burr in my ass and just decided within two minutes of the start of that conversation that I just HAVE to go! That I needed a break from my newborn baby (Ok so he’s 9 months now) and a break from work and just a BREAK in general. I was mad, insane, crazy, unthinking with my need to get AWAY! And what better place to get away to then New York City with a bunch of other crazed book lovers??? So it was thusly decided…

And It went something like this:

APRIL: “Arm Chair BEA signups aren’t open yet.”

TABS: “Isn’t that Expo soon? Where is it anyway?”

APRIL: “Yes, next month in New York!”

TABS: “hmmm you don’t say…….*furiously searches the net and finds the BEA site and sees early bird registration is still open…..sees dates….starts to get excited…* I want to go!”

APRIL: “Yeah, it would be nice to go.”

TABS: “No, I want to go, I’m GOING to go – I don’t care. – I’m not even going to see if it’s ok with work or my husband, I’m going, that’s it! *registers and buys ticket*

APRIL: *shocked? crazy laughter* …”Tabs you’re insane, what about work and the husband?”

TABS: That would suck if my boss tries to tell me no I can’t take the time off and then I have to quit my job…c’est la vie” …..*starts dialing husband’s cell phone*

TABS: “Sweety, I’m going to a Book Expo in New York next month, no I’m going by myself, when was I going to ask you? – I’m telling you right now aren’t I?”

Amazingly enough things worked out great – my husband agreed I needed time off from work and the baby and that I deserved to get away. He was much happier that I was able to get a travel partner, the amazing Richelle Clementson, my sister! He was so sweet too and used all of his business air miles to get me a First Class roundtrip ticket to NY from California! SQEEEE Now I’ve never flown First Class so I feel like a complete Queen and I think I’m just as excited about that as I am about the Expo itself.

Here is a list of just a few of the titles I am drooling over that I hear are going to be at BEA…by no means all the ones I’m after, it’s just getting late and I need to get to bed and stop drooling! Also these are not listed in order of importance! lol:

BEA is SO AWESOME! I went last year and now I can’t imagine not going. I’m looking forward to the end of this month SO MUCH.

I can barely contain myself…I know normal non book friends and family are tired of hearing about it already, and its so hard to think about anything else. I live in torment and dwell in darkness without you O’ sweet BEA….I come for you soon…

Funny! My and my friend, Brit were talking about it and I”m like I WANNA GO SO BAD! I”m trying to make plans to go. I have the money this time around and I can get off work, so why not?! I just gotta try and get another roommate or two so the hotel cost won’t be too much. I haven’t been to BEA yet, but when those recap posts come around I’m so jealous. Hopefully things will go smoothly and an extra roommate will pop up within the week. LOL

Yes the hotel cost is so much! One hotel roomy would be good two would be so cramped! I’ve never been in a New York hotel but I hear they are tiny. I saw pictures online and its no joke. Even the double occupancy rooms are small. I hope you get to go!

I hope you have an amazing trip. I haven’t been to BEA and I live right down the road near Philly. Flying across the country in First Class. Well, that’s all sorts of awesome. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes, and bring packing material so you can ship all your awesome books home and not have to carry them through the airport.

    • Tabitha the Pabkins

Thanks! I can’t believe you live so close and haven’t taken the opportunity! I hear Philly is where ALA is going to be this January. You shouldn’t pass that up since its in your city! I was thinking of going to that. Thanks for the tips, definitely bringing a roll of ppacking tape and Sharpie!

  4. BookishTrish

So frigging jealous of you and everyone going. And that was BEFORE I saw the list of books! Enjoy your escape!

    • Tabitha the Pabkins

Thanks! I know that book list makes my mouth water. Of course I hear its important to not get hopes up since its hard to get all the ones you want!

  5. DannyBookworm

Squeals!! I’m so excited you are going and…. we must meet! But, I’m pretty sure we will see each other in the same lines since we most definitely want to hit the same books! WOOT! It will be awesometastic!!

    • Tabitha the Pabkins

Yes yes yes! I will definitely stalk / find you haha. I’m sure it will be crazy fun. The only thing I’m scared about are the possible foot sores!

  6. Jen

Great book list! I’m sure I’ll be seeing you in a few lines 😀

    AAahhhhhh, I CAN’T WAIT!!

    BEA <3

    • Tabitha the Pabkins

Definitely! I hope I get to see everyone that I’ve seen online! haha. If the lines are as bad as I hear we will all have plenty of time to bump into each other! We’ll have to Twitter coordinate!

  7. vvb

wheeeeeeeeee! yay you! i’m planning to attend sometime in the next 5 years – sometime! for now it’s the ole armchair for me 😉 great way to meet fellow blogger face-to-face too. have a blast for me!

    • Pabkins

I will definitely do some booty book shaking happiness on your behalf. You can picture me rolling around on the floor amidst a pile of books like the cat that got the cream. …..won’t actually do that of course….I can be professional I swear…

    • Pabkins

No no sobbing plan for next year then we can meet up! I know I’m crazy I’m already thinking about next year lol

      • Alba @ BookPics

But I’m terribly shy… I promised myself last year, that I’d go this year and as you can see that didn’t happen :/

But I’m crossing my fingers X_X

  8. Vicky Hooper

Oh my gosh, wow!! That’s so exciting! 😀 Hope you have a fantastic time! And take lots of photos for the rest of us jealous people. 😉 And buy lots of books! ALL the books! (maybe don’t follow that last bit of advice… book-filled suitcases are heavy).

    • pabkins

Yes – but luckily I have a 70 pound per bag limit for the airline ticket I got. and 2 bags. They are only going to go from the hotel to the taxi to the check in counter at the airport. hahah!

    • pabkins

Well you definitely should plan to come next year if not this year! I’m already thinking ahead to next year. My hubs thinks I’m insane!

      • AimeeKay

        *sigh* I wish…

Tell hubby you are not insane, you are being responsible and planning ahead. 🙂

  9. Melody

Great list! I’m also looking forward to the titles from Holly Black, Maggie Stiefvater, Amy Tintera, Jordana Frankel, Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner, V.E. Schwab, Katie Sise, Sean Williams, Eve Silver, and Gretchen McNeil!
