BEA 2013: Tabitha went and was conquered!

June 21, 2013 Event 14

That’s right I went to BEA – and did I conquer it? No, I really didn’t – it totally whipped my ass!

I know I’m SO late in doing this BEA wrap up post – but I just couldn’t believe how long it’s taken me to recuperate (plus I was waiting on a box I shipped to arrive!)  First to tell you about some of the awesome other bloggers I met! The first day for me was Wednesday which I spent at the BEA Blogger Conference.  For me it was totally worth going because I was able to score some books that I definitely wouldn’t have been able to get during the normal BEA days.

This is my sister Richelle and I – and a Pirate – why take this photo? Because come on he’s a PIRATE!

I spent the entire day there hanging out with the lovely Hannah from The Girl in a Cafe (she’s from Australia – so boy did she travel far!) I ADORE Hannah – she was such a sweetie – though I know who I caught my cold from! Mandie from Vegan YA Nerds is also from Australia who I met that same day – I conned them both into trying some mochi I had stashed in my bag as a snack….I think they might have thought they were elephant boogers.

Hannah (Girl in a Cafe) and I below.

Richelle, my fabulous sister – (she makes the fabulous dolls at Dollusions) spent the entire week going crazy for books – trying to get all the ones we wanted…which was an impossible task really.  Overall I’d say we did pretty well. Mostly we stuck together but sometimes we lost each other in the shuffle. I’m jealous she got to meet Kendare Blake and I did not!  I kid you not one time when I reached down to pick up Curtsies and Conspiracies I was TRAPPED under the press of bodies trying to get the book that I had to CRABWALK out from underneath the mass of bodies practically squashing me to the floor.  Insane right?

I ran into Jen from At Random Blog a few times and she was just so sweet! I spent some of the last day, Saturday, running around to a few booths with her – she drove in with her friend from Canada! I was also so happy to run into Pam the Unconventional Librarian – she was so awesome, a veteran BEAer.  I also hung out off and on with Karen from For What It’s Worth! She was so dedicated that she brings her husband with her on the seek and capture missions for books.  They arrived super crazy early every morning and were always at the front of the line waiting to get into the Exhibition Hall.  Now THAT is dedication! Another awesome lady that I hung out with the entire Friday was Angie from Beneath the Jacket – she lives in New York but she had left her phone/watch at home.  And time is SUCH an important thing at BEA to keep track of.  Since we had so many books in common we hung out and conquered the booths!  Lastly, I bumped into Danny and Pushy from Bewitched Bookworms quite a few times.  They seriously knew what they were doing, I’m jealous of their crazy haul they were able to come away with!

I of course ran into quite a few other bloggers – but those are the ones I definitely had a business card for and I’m obviously too lazy to try and remember everyone I met.  If I forgot to include you I’m sorry but hopefully we’ll rub elbows again next time!

Because I am HIGHLY unorganized all of these photos appear in no particular order – it would take more work than I’m willing to do right now to put these in order or which day they were taken!

This is Soman Chainani – I have to say he was one of the highlights of my trip.  When I came up to the table and introduced myself he literally lunged across the table to hug me – It started to make me cry I felt so good! He is such an awesome guy and wonderful author – I’m beating myself up waiting for the next book after The School for Good and Evil (My Review) and don’t forget it’s already being made into a movie! -my review has the book trailer and a playlist I made!

Now I don’t have a picture of me WITH Mari Mancusi the author of Scorched – but she is actually the person that TOOK this photograph.  We had an awesome chat while she was waiting to go into the BEA Live booth for her interview.  This is my mock death that I promised her! We were totally photo bombed by the random dude waiting in line. Seriously, check her out – I already plan to buy her other book I found out about while there Gamer Girl.  She has a sweet blog too called Apocalypse Later.

This is me with Brandon Sanderson! I am a HUGE fan of his – I think I’ve been to at least 4 or 5 signings of his over the years (before he got so popular that you now have to wait like 3 hours to get a book signed haha)  He is so sweet and friendly! That is Steelheart – it sounds fantastic of course! I keep up to date on where he is on writing his next books because he has awesome progress bars on his BLOG!

Steelheart Brandon Sanderson

The FABULOUS Holly Black showcasing her forthcoming book The Coldest Girl in Coldtown – icy burn baby I look forward to reading this one so much! I stalk her – well she DID just write a book about a creepy doll made from a dead girl and you know I love dolls! Check out her blog!

THE CHUCK! – Ok Chuck Wendig – for those of you who don’t already know – where have you been? Check him out he has a Terrible Mind! AND He is only the most awesome author out there! Dark, gritty, funny and in your face with the awesome – I stalked him all over BEA.  He had 3 books there! The Blue Blazes, Unclean Spirits and Under the Empyrean Sky – all by different publishers! That’s right I scored all three!

Blue Blazes Chuck Wendig

This is Kelsey Sutton the author of Some Quiet Place.  If this one hasn’t come up on your radar you need to put it on your to read list STAT! It is so excellent! The girl can’t feel emotions she sees them! I already know I need her to write more more more – because literally I’m aching for something else written by her.  Until then her BLOG will have to tide me over.

Kelsey Sutton

I waited in a crazy long line to get a finished copy of The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey!

Another long line that I waited in for The Ward by Jordana Frankel.  It sounds so awesome and Hannah guaranteed me that it is!

I have more photos but this post just needs to end already – it’s making me tired! I hope everyone who is heading off to ALA next week has a blast! I wish I could be going!

When I'm in the zone I can flip book pages faster than the eye can see - screaming "More Input!" I'm a book, yarn, & art supply hoarding goblin who loves to draw, make toys and craft all sorts of creepy cute things. My current habit is to listen to audio books while I'm arting it up!

It was a ton of leg work! Talk about some sore sore feet and shoulders. I ended up with some hickie looking marks by the end of the trip. I’m still amazed that I went!

Oh I’m so jealous beyond belief! I really want to read Cress and I couldn’t believe they are going to do a very limited drop of it! have you read the Marissa Meyer Cinder and Scarlet? If you have you know why I’m going crazy. If you’d be interested in ARC swaps later let me know!!

I was in that Curtsies and Conspiracies crush! That was the worst– actually, that whole area was pretty bad during the galley drops, especially since most of the books were on the floor behind, like, five chairs or something.

Also, I’ve never heard of/read any of Chuck Wendig’s books before, but ALL the ones he was signing on Saturday seemed so cool! I was going to go to all of them but then I didn’t want to seem like a creeper? So I came back with only an ARC of Under the Empyrean Sky. I’m looking forward to reading it, though! (It’s actually next on my TBR list.)

I’m so glad someone else thought that book drop was madness! I reached down to pick up the book between the masses of crushing bodies and someone kind of shoved me from behind (I’m sure probably not on purpose they were all packed in like sardines) so then I ended up on my hands and knees on the floor. Super claustrophobic experience!

I’m a total creeper! I don’t think Chuck would have minded at all! He was so friendly and jovial everytime I saw him. He even wrote in one of the books “I will totally talk to you on twitter now.” Because I’d teased him that he’d never responded to any of my comments on his blogs/twitter. Haha. He was like ARE YOU SURE? and I’m all – OF COURSE I’M YOUR STALKER I’M SURE! – so …yeah I’m a total a creeper. Hopefully not tooo creepy though.

  3. Hannah

I had so much fun this year, and meeting you was great! I’m sorry we couldn’t spend more time together. 🙁

    Next year!

  4. Leslie

I am epically jealous! Maybe next year I can meet up with you at BEA though I don’t know if I could con Fernando into going and I am far too shy to go on my own.

I’m glad to hear you had such a great time. I hope that some of these books are floating around Comic Con next month.

I’m seriously considering going again next year. I think I want to try ALA as well. I will totally go by myself. You will make friends! Every day I was hanging out with someone else. I would hang out with you cause you rock Leslie. You don’t need Fernando to go! Don’t worry being in all that book buzz loving madness will bring out the crazed woman in you!

      • Leslie

I think I’ve convinced Fernando it’s a good idea as part of a longer vacation in New York, so as long as financials hold up, I’m confident we’ll be going next year. I don’t think he’d be too happy if I went to NYC without him no matter what the reason was. So hopefully you return and we can hang out!

Are you on Facebook? I think that’s the only place where there are pictures of me.
