NOS4A2 is a spine-tingling novel of supernatural suspense from master of horror Joe Hill, the New York Times bestselling author of Heart-Shaped Box and Horns.

Victoria McQueen has a secret gift for finding things: a misplaced bracelet, a missing photograph, answers to unanswerable questions. On her Raleigh Tuff Burner bike, she makes her way to a rickety covered bridge that, within moments, takes her wherever she needs to go, whether it’s across Massachusetts or across the country.

Charles Talent Manx has a way with children. He likes to take them for rides in his 1938 Rolls-Royce Wraith with the NOS4A2 vanity plate. With his old car, he can slip right out of the everyday world, and onto the hidden roads that transport them to an astonishing – and terrifying – playground of amusements he calls “Christmasland.”

Then, one day, Vic goes looking for trouble—and finds Manx. That was a lifetime ago. Now Vic, the only kid to ever escape Manx’s unmitigated evil, is all grown up and desperate to forget. But Charlie Manx never stopped thinking about Victoria McQueen. He’s on the road again and he’s picked up a new passenger: Vic’s own son.

Everybody loves Christmas…well not anymore folks cause I’m here to tell you that Christmasland is creepy. Those lovely little children running around have sharp hooked teeth and would love to see your insides spill from you in a hot gush of bright red. NOS4A2 takes our beloved holiday and turns it on it’s head by creating a villain the likes of which I haven’t seen before.

I have to start this off with my favorite quote from the book…because well – it’s just true!

“I don’t know, maybe you’d be more interested in me if I were a book.” – pg 589
There are some definite fantasy elements here. Victoria McQueen is one of those rare people that have a certain gift, an ability to enter another place, an inscape it’s called, where things are just as real but the rules that govern it are completely different than our reality. Ever since she was a child she could use her beloved bike to travel across a bridge to the location of whatever lost item she was looking for. Each person who has these gifts can do something different and has a different object from reality that helps them access their inscape. A bike, a car…scrabble tiles. What a trip right?

NOS4A2 pretty much covers the course of Vic’s entire life from her childhood to her adult years. She didn’t have the perfect home life but neither did it seem very harsh. She definitely idolized her father…

“Vic’s father was badass. Other dads built things. Hers blew shit up and rode away on a Harley, smoking the cigarette he used to light the fuse. Top that.” – pg 14
So you get to become really acquainted with her for better…and for worse. And believe you me there is a whole heck of a lot of worse. The story is told for the most part from her perspective but from time to time it will switch to another key character.  These added perspectives peppered throughout the book sync perfectly with the flow. Oh yes and the illustrations throughout were great!

There were some agonizing moments in this book that I could completely relate to and then other times while I was reading I thought ‘huh – how did you know?’  This one particular quote threw me for a loop and really made me wonder how alone Vic must have felt as these thoughts went through her mind. Maybe ever mother feels this way in her darkest moments. Vic was a magnificently broken character and Joe Hill laid her bare for us to see her deepest pains.

“It was no good being a mother. She wanted to start a website, a public-awareness campaign, a newsletter, to get the word out that if you were a woman and you had a child, you lost everything, you would be held hostage by love: A terrorist who would only be satisfied when you surrendered your entire future.” – pg 199
While it is categorized as horror I definitely didn’t find myself scared, creeped out a bit maybe, but never scared. There wasn’t any point late at night where I felt I had to put the book down. There have been books in the past that caused me to flip on all the lights in the house as I moved through them – not so with this. So if you’re a scaredy pants I think you’ll be just fine with NOS4A2.

Don’t wait for Christmas just go the hell out and buy it right now and start reading – you won’t be sorry.

When I'm in the zone I can flip book pages faster than the eye can see - screaming "More Input!" I'm a book, yarn, & art supply hoarding goblin who loves to draw, make toys and craft all sorts of creepy cute things. My current habit is to listen to audio books while I'm arting it up!

No zombie books for you then huh? Hopefully it doesn’t scare you too much, unless you like that sort of thing haha. Sometimes I do, hence why I keep reading the occasional horror. Plus the horror writers just go places mentally that others don’t wouldn’t you agree? Thanks for having me!
