Short Story Review: Charmed I'm Sure by Elliott James

December 7, 2013 4 stars, Book Review 8 ★★★★

Charmed I'm Sure

This is the first in a series of short stories by debut author Elliott James. The first of his novels, Charming, will be out in September 2013.

When Tom Morris encounters a naked man walking along the interstate with no memory of how he got there, the smart thing to do is drive away. The only problem is, Tom Morris has secrets of his own. Like the fact that he comes from a long line of witch finders, monster slayers, and enchantment breakers, or that his real name is Charming. John Charming.

Other Short Fiction by Elliott James:

Don’t Go Chasing Waterfalls
Pushing Luck
Surreal Estate
Dog-Gone

Charmed I’m sure takes place just before the first book in the series, Charming. It was a nice taste of what you’re in for with the main character Jon and gives you an idea about his abilities and his personality.

John is on the move, trying to outpace the Knights that are after him. He’s just left Alaska behind and is driving along when he sees a naked man stumbling up the side of the road. When he stops to help and later goes hunting for what reason this poor guy was buck naked and didn’t realize what year it was – he finds a female fae that keeps men and uses them up and discards them like so much garbage. They are both in for one hell of a fight.

I highly recommend checking out this short story if you’re looking to see whether this series will be a good fit for you. I have already read Charming and loved it and this was a very enjoyable short.

When I'm in the zone I can flip book pages faster than the eye can see - screaming "More Input!" I'm a book, yarn, & art supply hoarding goblin who loves to draw, make toys and craft all sorts of creepy cute things. My current habit is to listen to audio books while I'm arting it up!

I didn’t know there was a short story in the same universe, I’ll have to check this out. But I was really mixed by the first novel…

I loved the first book – I snatched up all the short stories out right now I think there are supposed to be 5. 3 of which are out already – one I think is still up for free on the Orbit website.

me too! It’s how I find new authors by picking up anthologies and reading them through. I always end up with a handful of new authors to check out!

Woohoo! I never even thought to look there – I just went nuts and bought them all. They are great reads to do inbetween books when deciding what to read next.
