Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish
THIS WEEK’S TOP TEN:
Top Ten – If you Like That Tv show, movie, etc – Try these
If you like LORD OF THE RINGS (epic fantasy) or LOST GIRL (Urban Fantasy)
Traditional or Epic Fantasy! – these are books that might not necessarily be similar but in some ways or element are or I just think you’d like them just as much because hey they are awesome too. So neener neener.
The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson | Goodreads | – Epic epic – lots of characters a loads of amazing world building, so many interweaving subplots. Its a smorgasboard of fantasy.
The DeathGate Cycle series (Dragon Wing is book#1) by Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman | Goodreads | – I’m listing these for the dragons because hey ‘here there be dragons, yar’ Its grand in scope in my opinion and traverses several worlds and characters with each book introducing more characters.
The Deed of Paksenarrion by Elizabeth Moon | Goodreads | – I read this series so long ago but I still remember it as a favorite. It has elves, humans, war – dark scary things, a Paladin (and she’s a girl yo) and epic style adventuring and quests.
Dragonriders of Pern (Dragonflight is book #1) by Anne McAffrey | Goodreads | – can you tell I’m going with dragons here? Heck in my mind there can never be enough dragons. Ok I admit I’m actually light on epic fantasy because I don’t know it as well as say…my friend Mogsy.
A Song of Ice and Fire series (A Game of Thrones is book #1) by George R. R. Martin | Goodreads | – this one is a given because hey the tv show GAME OF THRONES is extremely popular and if you like that too why not try out the books they are based on right? Plus there be dragons here as well *wink*
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now onto some Urban Fantasy! Have you seen the show LOST GIRL? No? You should because it’s so much fun. It has a succubus as the man character and lots of other awesome paranormal races. A sexy as hell werewolf being my favorite. Oh and its cheesy a bit but in a totally good way.
Generation V by M.L. Brennan | Goodreads | – a new and unique vampire mythos and a modern day setting with a male lead who is a vampire and yet mortal. It has kitsune (fox shapeshifters), Fey aka elves, ghouls, and other nasties. Tons of human and lots of fun.
Written in Red by Anne Bish0p | Goodreads | – A very different feeling urban fantasy than I’ve come across before. The ‘Others’ are the ones who really dominate the earth instead of humans being the ones that don’t ‘know’ about the creatures that lurk in the dark. Here they know, boy do they know and they are scared. Given that though it still has some great humor, strong themes and of course…a sexy werewolf.
Three Parts Dead by Max Gladstone | Goodreads | – This one actually mixes fantasy and urban fantasy. And the magic users are this twisted kind of lawyer. There are dead gods, gargoyles and a crazy nightclub. Not to mention a vampire pirate – come on you know you want to.
SkinWalker by Faith Hunter | Goodreads | – This UF features a Native American skinwalker that can turn into any creature but mostly favors the mountain lion. She is kick ass, has stakes and will travel (mostly for killing vampires) – there are witches and other creatures to contend with as well. A fun action packed series.
Blood Oranges by Kathleen Tierney | Goodreads | – Super fast, lost of four letter words and hey a anti-heroine, she’s really just out to save her own ass and she’s a recovered crack junkie against her own will only because she lands up turning into one of the nasties now and she craves other things instead.
I watched about the first 20 minutes of the first episode of Lost Girl and keep wondering if I should go back to it, thinking I might need to give it another chance 🙂 Also, love the fact that while I have heard of most (but not all) of these books, I’ve actually only read 2 (WoK and ASoIaF).
That’s good to hear – means that these books hit your radar before and I’m just sweeping them back in your direction again.
I’ve only seen the first season of Lost Girl – I barely have time to watch tv but I was entertained.
I bought the audiobook of The Way of Kings. I’m just need to listen to it. It’s 45+ hours long!!
I love dragons so much I need to check some of those dragons books.
From the other books I have read Generation V and Written in Red. Loved both books. I also have (since ever) Skin walker but haven’t read it.
I bought the audio book too. Which is fabulous. But the more I listened the more I realized i just HAD to read it instead because some things like detailed world building I suck up better if I see the words.
I know I enjoyed the Death Gate series, but I don’t remember them very well. They’ve been on the re-read list for ages.
I hope I have time to reread them again someday soon as well. They are one of my fav series of all time.
I haven’t watched Lost Girl yet … but it does seem good. I am always afraid a show will get canceled so I try to give it some time before I start watching.
I need to watch Lost Girl. Have you read Succubus Blues by Richelle Mead. I love that series, too. And I so need to read at least the first Game of Thrones book this year.
Nope I haven’t read the Succubus Blues books but I do believe I own the first. I suggest you wait on the Game of Thrones books until he is completely done with the series because those are books I definitely don’t want to reread every five years.
I haven’t seen Lost Girl, and I haven’t read any of these books! Most of my experience with urban fantasy has been with Charles de Lint. Oh, and Melissa Marr’s Wicked Lovely (but I’d rather forget I wasted my time reading that one).
Tabitha (Pabkins)
I haven’t heard anyone speak about MMarr in a way that they loved and I simply must read…sad I own the book now LOL.
I have only read 2 Charles de Lint books but I hear the rest is fabulous. He wrote Svaha which is one of my fav books.
Pern! I love Pern. I may just reread Pern in the near future. At least the first three, and the dragonsong stuff.
Tabitha (Pabkins)
Yeah I agree – rereading it all would be a stretch but they were fabulous.
Ok wait – how have I barely read any of these?! I am especially interested in the UF recs; I am always looking for more of those series. I love Dresden and Mercy Thompson, of course, and the Bishop series. I really love them.
Ok, I’ve read Way of Kings, Dragonflight (but nothing else in that series), and Game of Thrones (but nothing else in that series… I refuse to pick it up until it’s finished at this point). And Written in Red. But that is IT!!!
This one definitely grew my TBR.
totally don’t read anymore of the Game of Thrones books until its all done I know I’m not.
As for Way of Kings I’m reading that now somewhat. I need to just push everything aside and read it.
Written in Red was amazing – now one of my new fav uf series. You will LOVE the second one.
So I just added two new fantasy series to my wishlist, and was reminded of one that I was interested in, but had slipped through the cracks. As for the rest . . . already read and loved, or on my TBR list. EXCELLENT choices 😉
