Book Binging (12) – Where I snark and drown happily in books

June 28, 2014 Book Binging, memes 50

Huzzah to Book Binging! and all things Science Fiction and Fantasy!

I think the past few weeks have been a little bit insane in the book review department. I started taking pictures and loading them to instagram almost daily from the amount of books that have been arriving. It’s like there are books getting naughty in the corners of every nook and crannie of my house and having more little book babies. They are literally running rampant everywhere. Not that I’m complaining!

PROTOTYPE by M.D. Waters | Goodreads |

Do you want to know what the first one was about? YOU SHOULD because it was spanktastic! A little bit of romance, a lot of sci-fi futurism and a whole lot of freaking women being held hostage to a world where men dominate and treat them like property. Ok not the whole world. There is a resistance and they are going to kick your bad ass all over the place. Hopefully we’ll see some of this ass kickery here in the second and final volume of the duology. Mogsy there’s some of this awesome headed your way!

CALIFORNIA BONES by Greg Van Eekhout | Goodreads |

It’s HEIST TIME BABY yyyyeahhh. But not just any kind of heist – a urban fantasy heist. There be bones, there be bone magic and all sorts of other fantastic sounding stuff. The author will be a guest next month! Check back – Will we love it – or Will we hates it? We don’t know my precious we don’t know.

FLIGHT OF THE GOLDEN HARPY by Susan Klaus | Goodreads |

Have any of you ever played World of Warcraft? No? You should – nuff said. Just don’t get addicted. Anyhow Harpies – you just don’t see them as often in fantasy. So as soon as I saw this – I made with the grabby hands. This has an alien planet, earth women being abducted and I hear from a reliable source that it’s intense and not for everyone but for me? THIS BETTER BE FOR ME I I WILL WAIL TO THE HEAVENS!

You haven’t lived and had fun until you’ve read some fantasy satire.  Billegerent goblins, the Big Bad Wolf, a professional dragon slayer!? Who gives a damn about these guys? Keeps them happy? supplies their health insurance and otherwise keeps the minions in line? I don’t flipping know but I’m about to find out!!

THE FOG OF FORGETTING by G.A. Morgan | Goodreads |

A little bit of middle grade fantasy madness for you if you please? There’s an island, there’s fog – there’s some forgetting. What else am I forgetting here *wink*

LET’S GET LOST by Adi Alsaid | Goodreads |

What is this CONTEMPORARY on a Science Fiction and Fantasy Blog! Shooosh you heathens! I’ll read what I want. We are making a special teensy weensy exception for this one because it sounds amazing and hey – I took a cross country road trip by myself when I was 18 and thats what this girl is doing and instead of her trip being told from her perspective its told from the perspective of everyone she meets on the way. Sounds trippy. *catch my pun there? – I know I’m Hi lar i ous*

THE BONE SEASON by Samantha Shannon | Goodreads |

Anyone else read this? This book arrived unexpectedly at my door and I say – should I look it up on goodreads? Should I give myself pre-bias for or against it? Or just dive in at some future undetermined time? I guess you’ll know if you find a review of it pop up someday in the far far future. Here there be dreamwalkers in Scion London so says the book blurb. I’m liking the sound.

THE MAGICIANS and THE MAGICIAN KING by Lev Grossman | Goodreads |

Magic, Magicians, Magician Kings and soon a Magician’s Land – I don’t know about you but I’m thinking there be magic squirting out of some ears here!

The Bookoutlet package has finally arrived! FEEL THE POWER OF MY AWESOME CLICKITY CLICK CLICK BUYING FINGERS!!! You may squeal with me over my awesome buys and loots below. I will hold it against you if you don’t. Oh and of course I bought some of these locally as well. I can’t drive within a mile radius of a bookstore without coming home with something. If they knew that they would all be cropping up all over my neighborhood.

Look at that cover and tell me you can stop yourself from buying this. I don’t care if this book turns out to be a piece of gosa it’s going to sit on my shelf and look pretty forever. Let’s really hope it’s good though ok? Ok. Because Hello – there is a Brothel island where you can get sex and simulated violence. I’ve heard it compared to Tank Girl! Cyberpunk – sometimes I like my stuff down, dirty and extremely violent – you’ve been warned.

THE THOUSAND NAMES by Django Wexler | Goodreads |

So if you’re a loyal stalker you might say – but Tabitha you OWN this already – why yes stalker person I do. But I didn’t own it in HARDCOVER! Which I must needs to have fixed by buying this. How else am I going to truly appreciate it unless I can sniff it’s pages? Stop thinking dirty thoughts you.

ARCHETYPE by M.D. Waters | Goodreads |

So yes – I own this one also – DID I TELL YOU I”M MAD? MAD MAD MAD for books. If I love it (which I did as you can see) then I have to have a physical copy. All the easier to pimp out these pages to my unsuspecting friends and family. Shazam they don’t know what hit them. This book is too cool. Futuristic Sci Fi dystopian. Women are mostly barren and grow up in camps where they are later sold as wives. There’s more to it – and all of it will rock you.

NEPTUNE’S BROOD by Charles Stross | Goodreads |

This is a Hugo nom this year and I can’t just read a sample – I MUST READ IT ALL! Samples…pfffft what do I look like – like someone who does things half assed?

SOMETHING MORE THAN NIGHT by Ian Tregillis | Goodreads |

Normally I don’t pick up too many biblical angels and demons type books because sometimes they can get a bit freaking preachy. Don’t preach to me yo. But this just looks fabulous, mobster urban fantasy with angels and demons AND Mogsy said it was and I have utmost faith in all that Mogsy says! *sings* In Mogsy we believe* all together now!

Last week I picked up DARKNESS SHOWS THE STARS? I think that’s the title – I’m too lazy to look it up. I’m weird in that I buy books without even having read the other one – I just buy and buy. Does it burn me sometimes? Yes…frequently. *watches money swirl down the drain* but other times I get lucky. Are you feeling lucky? I’m you’re Huckleberry.

FLESH & BONE by Jonathan Maberry | Goodreads |

No my sweets I have not read any of the previous books – I know I know. I have an addiction. I just can’t stop. Look at my red hot dancing shoes they makes me click the buy button. Zombies do do do do bebop shadooby dooby

THE LOST by Vicki Petersson | Goodreads |

How are you liking my running commentary so far? Tired yet? I sure as hell am. I bought this because I noticed I think Carmel at Rabid Reads enjoyed the trilogy – I have the first and I saw the second on sale. Now I have to verify if it was her. Yep it was her – see the link for her review.

COPPERHEAD by Tina Connolly | Goodreads |

She’s holding a freaking iron mask ya’ll – it has to be good right? Have I read the first Iron Skin? Noooo but I bought it – that counts right?

ENDURANCE by Jay Lake | Goodreads |

I must buy all of his books in this series because they have the best covers ever. Someday I might even get around to reading them all. If not we can just drool over the cover together. Just don’t drool on the cover hey.

And that’s all folks! Actually it really isn’t – would you believe me that I bought more books as well but I got tired of listing them? Yes I’m freaking lazy. At some point I’m going to realize how ridiculous I’m being with the amount of books I buy and I’ll stop. Or so the husband hopes. It ain’t happening – The first step to admitting you have a problem – is admitting you have a problem. I DO NOT HAVE A PROBLEM! – NEVER GIVE UP! NEVER SURRENDER!

My Crazy Corner

– Tonight (Friday 6/27) I’m going on date night to see A CHORUS LINE with the man himself. Yes I convinced him to go watch a musical. And he will be doing so every other Friday for the next several months. SOUTH PACIFIC, MARY POPPINS, LA CAGE, and BRIGADOON.

– Tina has officially given me a new form of crack smack to be addicted to. Her homemade freaking scones. WHERE ARE MY SCONES BITCH!!? Did I say you could come out of the kitchen?

– I sent out care packages this past week! I do so on a regular basis for the duplicates I get – so if you ever see me mention something as a duplicate (which I tend to do on my INSTAGRAM) never hesitate to pipe up if you’re interested in it!

When I'm in the zone I can flip book pages faster than the eye can see - screaming "More Input!" I'm a book, yarn, & art supply hoarding goblin who loves to draw, make toys and craft all sorts of creepy cute things. My current habit is to listen to audio books while I'm arting it up!

Amazing haul! I hated The Magicians, too, but lots of people seem to love it. I really want to hear what you think of Golden Harpy. And I didn’t LOVE Bone Season, but also found the story popping back up in my head waaaay after reading, so I’ll definitely try #2!

And YES to the Tombstone reference! I KNEW I loved you!

I have so many books that end up that way. I do have a compulsive book buying addiction if you can’t tell. But I figure I have an entire upstairs living room that is a personal library with two couches and a cage swing chair, that now I’m stockpiling books for retirement.

So many books, I still don’t know how you can ever hope to read all these, even with helpers:-) I have so much guilt for all the review books I’ve never gotten to, I just have backed way off with my requests. So, I’ve read the other comments, and I also HATED The Magicians (go Nathan!), it was so boring, it was a DNF for me. I also really didn’t enjoy THE BONE SEASON that much. It definitely had its moments, but I couldn’t shake the fact that a 21 year old wrote it, and I could tell. I think she’ll be brilliant in about 10 years. On a happier note, THANK YOU AGAIN for my awesome care package! *gets up and dances*

You know obviously some of them don’t get read for a long time. The once that come unsolicited almost never get read and instead passed on to someone else. I hate not being able to review them all that’s why I brought on Tina and Maggie (and Angie might decide she wants to read more – we’ll see)

I hear such different sides on Magicians. I think I’ll fall on the love side. Hopefully I will for The Bone Season as well. But I might have one of the other ladies read that one.

      You’re welcome!!

And you know even with all the books that HAVE been arriving and even though I know I can’t read them all instantly I’m still so sad when books like RAIN and Child of a Hidden Sea don’t arrive from the pubs. Isn’t that weird? I’m addicted aren’t I?

Nice haul, you got a lot of really great books!

I love The Magicians trilogy! The characters are not at all likable which annoys many people but they develop a lot throughout the series. The plot in The Magicians starts off slow but it gets better. What I like most about the series is that there are a lot of references to classic fantasy series and it almost feels like a parody or satire. The final book in the series comes out in about a month, and I can’t wait to read it!

I also liked The Bone Season. There’s a lot of info-dumping but the world is completely fascinating and the plot is thrilling. Don’t look it up on goodreads! Go into it without much knowledge and I think you’ll enjoy it more.

It’s totally understandable when all characters aren’t likeable. Sometimes I have a hard time with that too – but I’m hoping I end up loving the books. Slow starts can sometimes get me and kill my fervor to keep reading oh noeees.

I love parody and satire though!!

as for Bone Season – that might be a read for Tina or Maggie I don’t handle info dumping well LOL Or I’ll keep it and read it we’ll see. Ok going in blind!

  4. Mogsy

Looking at some of the books you bought, if I’m not mistaken from some of your previous book hauls, pretty sure you might have doubled up there on some past purchases again, Tabs! Ah the dangers of being a book blogger/addict!

Really interested to see what you’ll think of The Magicians, since you and I are so in tune when it comes to book characters. You’ll either love it because characterization is done so well, or hate it because you want to throw each and every one of those emo-kids through a window.

OH yes I definitely did have some double up. YOu know what was hilarious. I PURCHASED a hardcover final copy of Archetype the same week that the new paperback one was sent unexpectedly to me from the publisher. (Which is the one I’m sending you) I had reviewed the digital kindle copy when it first came out but decided I wanted it in hardback so I could loan it to my cousin Gosia. Plus good books deserve to be owned in all versions.

I did the same with The Thousand Names…bought the kindle version what a few months ago? Then decided I had to have the hardback when I saw it on book outlet. I’m so nutso.

Wow, you got a lot of books this week! I am not allowed to shop for books, especially online. Unless for other people (of course). We will see how long that actually lasts though. I said if I’m good I can buy a lot of books at the YA conference in September.

You got yourself a lot of awesome books, it seems! I really want to read Prototype now. I first heard about it from Joy @ Joyous Reads when she was talking about it on Twitter, and I just read the blurb today from your post and WOW, I understand why she would rave about it. It sounds fabulous. I really want it now, but thankfully, July 26 is not too far away, and there’s Archetype to read and rave over first!

And I’m glad to see Across A Star-Swept Sea here. I loved that book so much. It was even better than its predecessor, imo. I hope you enjoy all of them <3

If only Bookoutlet ships to my side of town, I’d be doing the happy dance. I’ll have to make do with the Book Depository and Amazon (but oh the shipping fee is giving me tachycardia)!

Awesome haul!! I see some really interesting reads. Some I’m not familiar with but I’ll be sure to check them out.

  9. Micheline @ Lunar Rainbows Reviews

Oh-so many pretties here and I haven’t read ANY of them D: My copy of the Bone Season is collecting dust on my shelf, seeing it here reminded me that I must get into it soon! The Magician, Let’s Get Lost and Across the Star-Swept Sea are all on my wishlist/tbr! The Fog of Forgetting and The Thousand Names look really great too! I hope you enjoy ALL of these – happy reading 🙂

That’s a ton of books! I like the look of Flight of the golden Harpy, great cover, and Archetype sounds good too. And I saw Koko Takes a Holiday at the bookstore and thought it looked pretty wild, but I didn’t get it. Hope it’s good!

And maybe you should try your own hand at scones, LOL. Yeah, right. *snickers* BUT have you tried homemade scones with LEMON CURD yet? Have you? If you haven’t you need to–it’s AMAZING 😉

Nope I totally haven’t read it yet =) I hear very conflicting things about it. It didn’t strike me as a must read last year – but I might give it a chance. Or Tina or Maggie might read it we’ll see. It’s unsolicited so goes to the bottom of the pile unfortunately.
