Love to doodle, paint, craft or just you know – CREATE?
Fan Art Up! is a weekly meme hosted by Tabitha @ Not Yet Read. It is dedicated to showcasing our Fan Art and doodles inspired by entertainment media, whether it’s Books, Movies, Anime, Comics, etc. Break out those dusty art supplies!
Rules for participating can be found on the Fan Art Up! main page

This week’s art was inspired by Studio Ghibli
Specifically anime films like SPIRITED AWAY and MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO
You know I love anime and pretty much every Miyazaki film out there. But one of the things I love best are the little dust sprites. That’s right these little guys.
They are known as “Susuwatari” or dust sprites, soot sprites, dust bunnies – you get the picture.

So I find that they often show up in my random doodles. Not that the rest of the doodle is inspired by the Ghibli films but these little guys most certainly are!
Great news! I know some of you keep pestering me to add some color to my sketches. I swear to you that I am TERRIBLE at coloring. But but but – I’m going to start trying. I’ve ordered some COPIC markers and some special paper and hopefully in the upcoming weeks we might see some color on my doodles. Now if they turn out terrible you have no one but yourself to blame because I did warn you – I’m terrible at coloring…like imagine a 2 year old letting loose in a coloring book – It’s going to look something like that. And my adorable little black and white sketches WILL LOOK LIKE THEY ARE BLEEDING RAINBOWS OF DEATH!!
Alright folks link up and lets see what you’ve done! Remember to link back to this post!

TOUGH TRAVELING
Hosted by Nathan @ Fantasy Review Barn
Each Thursday, our copy of ‘The Tough Guide to Fantasyland’ in hand, we shall tour the mystical countryside looking for adventure and fun (and tropes) from all over fantasy.
Today’s Tour Topic is…Mentor
MENTOR. A tour official who will be at your service until halfway through the tour, when you will unexpectedly lose him.
The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa – there is an old vamp that turns a young girl and mentors her for a short while before of course conveniently disappearing and sending her off on her own.
Delia’s Shadow by Jaime Lee Moyer – a marvelous mentor in this one teaches Delia to control her gift of seeing spirits (she doesn’t abandon her though)
Sorrow’s Knot by Erin Bow – a young girl who’s been mentored her whole life by her mother is left to her own devices when her mother refuses to teach her any further.

Your GIF is making me a touch dizzy, but they are cute little guys.
I have read none of your Tough Travels posts, that is rare. You sure you don’t want to mention Pratchett in some way? =)

Oh Yes! Delia’s Shadow and Immortal Rules – I should have had that one on the list – I even have No.2 sat on my windowsill waiting to be read!! Damn.
Those dust bunnies do look pretty cute with colour. Yes, colour in your sketches. Definitely.

I love the dust sprites, too! And I look forward to seeing these bleeding rainbows. I have not colored anything in a long time either but I am sure you will get better with practice. 🙂

Ooh, I love My Neighbor Totoro! Actually I recently designed a tattoo for someone who wanted a Totoro themed one, and yes I had included a dust sprite in the design 🙂

My sister is an artist and used to use copics. They work really well, especially on her anime drawings. All the luck to you! Looking forward to seeing!
Tabitha (Pabkins)
The coloring isn’t going so well for me yet. But I plan to watch some more videos and I made a instagram friend who is a artist who uses them so he’s giving me tips. Still my sketches now look like rainbows farted on them =(

Sorry it took me so long to respond. I had to catsit all week.
But don’t give up! First copic pictures always look like someone spilled paint on them, but in the end I don’t think there’s a better tool for showing off your hand-drawns online. You must have a good scanner because yours look great, but I know when I was drawing more often, I’d be really proud of something I made only to have it come out looking awful on the computer when I scanned it.
Danielle recently posted…Review: The Monster Within by Kelly Hashway
Tabitha (Pabkins)
Well the first few look absolutely awful. It’s really discouraging. I’ll be posting one tomorrow. I’ve also met someone who is giving me some tips. The picture I’m posting tomorrow was colored in with my Faber Castelle markers. At this point some of my sketches might get quicker and less to my standards because I don’t want to get as emotionally invested in them if I’m just going to destroy them with my bad coloring LOL

Danielle
That’s too bad! Maybe you could just scan a copy of your good ones to print and then save the original before you work on it.

I seriously need to try reading The Immortal Rules. I think it’s on my goodreads to-read shelf. Must check that.
And gosh, I just realised I was sitting there staring at those little black fuzz ball gif for aaaaages. x) It’s very addictive! lol

No I actually haven’t seen the last film because it wasn’t at all SFF related. I do plan to still buy it and watch it though. I just haven’t gotten around to it. I’ve see all the others though!

Megan (Adrift on Vulcan)
What a great feature idea! I’m just getting into the anime bandwagon, so I haven’t watched that many so far but those dust sprites are ADORBS. And so is your drawing! In fact, I think the dust sprites in your drawing are cuter than the ones in the GIF. 😉 They look more cuddly. Lol, I doubt you’d do that badly with colors! Looking forward to seeing a more colorful one next!

Thanks I’m glad you think mine are cuter! Course I doubt they are but then I’m bias cause I love all things Studio Ghibli haha.
The coloring is going TERRIBLY – I hates it….it’s destroying my cute sketches. *sigh*

The coloring is going….horribly. I hates it – but I just need to keep trying. It doesn’t help that I’m awful at shading and color theory.

Color isn’t my strong suit either, so I’ll be impressed no matter what you do! But, as with everything, I’d say just start simple. You don’t need 10 billion details for your first rodeo. Good luck!

Yes – I know – indeed the other artist said start out with cherries and simple round objects that way if I feel I’ve messed up that I am not emotionally invested. Cause I was so upset about destroying some of my cute sketches!

That’s a good idea! Or borrow a copy machine and make copies of your sketches so you don’t mess up the original. 🙂

Ooh that fan art is beautiful! You have such a talent. Every time I see your doodles on your blog or Instagram I just stare at them and drool. When I grow up I want to be just like you! haha.
Good luck adding color to your sketches! I think they’re perfect just as they are, but I’m interested in seeing what your coloring will look like after your wonderful description 😉

Thanks Asti! You like my doodles!! hooray. I love hearing that. As far as be like me uhhh no. If you want a doodle I’ll totally snail mail you one of my oh so special care packages. Don’t even care if you live out of the US.
The coloring is NOT going good. I feel like a failure – they all look horrendous. I’m actually better at painting then I am at using markers. I feel like a failure. I met a nice copic artist on instagram though who has been encouraging me and giving me tips. =)
bleeding rainbows is now more like shitting rainbows
